The Sealyham Terrier is a Welsh dog breed that was originally bred for hunting purposes. These dogs specialized in hunting otters, badgers, and even foxes. They are affectionate and will get along great with all family members. Although they were mostly kept for hunting and vermin control, these lovely, funny little dogs are mostly kept as family pets and companions.

The Sealyham Terrier was named after Captain Edwards’ estate in Haverfordwest, Wales. That estate was named Sealyham so the connection there is pretty obvious. Captain Edwards is credited for the creation of this breed and he wanted to create a breed that was able to hunt smaller, but tough game.

Breed History

Sealyham Terriers were originally used for hunting small animals such as badgers, otters, and foxes. They became extremely popular in England around the 1900s. AKC officially recognized this dog bred in 1911. However, this dog breed never got massive popularity with the general public. Today they are still rare dogs.

The characteristics of the Sealyham Terrier are similar to many other terrier breeds that are small and oblong. These dogs are well-balanced and have great substance. They are surprisingly powerful compared to their size.

Sealyham Terriers have black noses and square, powerful muzzles. Their eyes should be dark, well-set, and round. Pigmented dark eyes are preferred in the show ring. Their ears are carried on the side, next to the cheeks and they have slightly rounded tips.

These dogs have an oblong shape and should have deep and wide chests. Their tails were traditionally docked but when they have a full tail, it should be medium-long and thicker at the root.

Coat

Sealyham Terriers have a medium-long coat that is weather resistant. Their topcoat is hard while the undercoat is soft and dense. To prevent tangles and mats you should brush your dog a few times a week.

Sealyham Terrier coat colors:

  • all white
  • white with lemon, tan, or badger markings

They will also need other basic care; brush their teeth at least three times a week. Check their ears for signs of infection and redness, bathe them regularly, and trim their nails if they don’t wear them down naturally.

Sealyham Terrier temperament

The Sealyham Terrier’s temperament is that of a typical terrier. They are confident, curious, and friendly. Unlike other terrier breeds, the Sealyham Terrier is a bit more mellow and calmer. That makes these dogs a treat to be around and they are suitable for new dog owners that might not have as much experience.

The Sealyham Terrier is a proud dog. They consider themselves equal family members and they fully expect to be treated that way. They are outgoing and love to have fun. If a Sealyham Terrier gets bored he will think of some way to entertain himself and by doing that, they will entertain everyone around them.

Socialization and training

Sealyham Terrier’s training should start as soon as it arrives at your home. They are great watchdogs that will bark at anything they might consider out of the ordinary so it would be a great idea to teach your dog to stop barking on command. They react best to positive training methods and if you include loads of treats and food in your dog’s training, you will start noticing great results pretty fast.

Like any other dog breed, the Sealyham Terrier’s socialization should be a process that lasts throughout their whole life. They are wary of strangers and as soon as your new puppy arrives at your home, make sure they are exposed to many new and unfamiliar people and dogs. That way your new Sealyham Terrier puppy will learn social rules and a proper way to react to different life situations.

Sealyham Terrier and kids

Early socialization and proper training can teach them to behave even when children are around. Their temperament makes them more suitable for families with older children. However, Sealyham Terrier will not tolerate aggressive behavior towards them or even between other children and may stop their quarrel before it escalates.

Children should never be left alone with any dog, no matter what breed it might be. You should make sure that your children understand how to approach dogs of this breed and understand how to interact and play with them properly.

Sealyham Terrier and other animals

These dogs can get along well with other dogs and can enjoy their company. Generally, the Sealyham Terrier is a great pet to have if you already have other pets at home. They are extremely friendly and love having company, so your Sealyham Terrier won’t mind other pets.

However, every dog, no matter what breed they are, should be socialized and properly introduced to other pets. Take your time and even if your dog doesn’t react well on your first try doesn’t mean they won’t get along. Some dogs require time but Sealyham Terriers are generally very affectionate and gentle towards other pets, especially if they were raised together.

Health problems

The Sealyham Terrier is generally considered a healthy breed, but they are prone to some health issues and concerns like any other dog breed. These dogs have an average lifespan of 12-14 years.

When getting any breed, the breeder must show you health tests that they have done for their breeding dogs. Dogs must be adequately tested because taking a chance and hoping that the puppy’s parents are healthy is a risk no one should ever take. Only healthy dogs should be bred because that is the only way to assure that bloodlines will remain healthy and without any problems. Health problems associated with this breed are;

  • Lens Luxation
  • Retinal Dysplasia.
  • Ear infections

Breeders

If you decided that this is the right dog for you, now it’s time to find a good and responsible Sealyham Terrier breeder. Buying a dog from such a breeder will provide you with a healthy puppy who will not have health and temperament problems.

Buying a dog from a responsible breeder will cost you more money, but you can be sure that you will get a healthy puppy. Sealyham Terrier is still a rare dog breed and if you are interested in getting one of these dogs you must be prepared that you will be put on the waiting list.

When you bring your new puppy home start with the training and socialization immediately. By doing so, you will end up with a well-behaved dog whom you can trust. Provide him with enough daily exercise for him to be happy. With this dog, you must be firm and you must be an alpha for him to listen to you. If you devote your time and energy to this dog, you can be sure that you will end up with a companion for life.
